  • Provide Lending Library services.
  • Create Story-in-a-Bag kits with correlated hands-on reading, math, and science activities.
  • Read the story from the Story-in-a Bag and then lead learning activities tied into the story of the day.
  • Model creative teaching strategies for teachers .

After stocking up with books from the Sand Castle Library, our bookmobiles travel Monday - Friday to primary schools across the island of Roatan.

Teachers are excellent partners in this project.  They have the children ready -with books previously checked-out - to visit the bookmobile.  PIER's librarians greet the children, collect their returning books, and then let them explore the shelves for new books to check out.  The teacher is provided a list of books their children have selected.

Because of our limited Spanish collection, children may only select one Spanish and two English-language books.

On the Bookmobile &  in the Classroom

You can help to keep our bookmobiles rolling!

100% of the PIER $55,000 budget supports this project - keeping books on the shelves, paying salaries of the bookmobiles' two librarians and two reading specialists, fueling and maintaining the bookmobiles, and the Sand Castle Library and its one librarian.  Review our financial report for more information.

We can't do it without you!
